Free guide

Publish your first coloring book on Amazon KDP

This guide goes from idea to live listing. It promises no income: it helps you avoid the mistakes that get a book rejected or leave it invisible.

1. Pick a theme that already sells

Search your idea on Amazon (e.g. "coloring book cozy cats"). Look at the results: the "bought in past month" badge and the Best Sellers Rank show real demand. A specific theme (cats + café + Bold & Easy) beats a vague one.

2. Create the book

In Doodimo: theme, style, audience, 8.5 × 11 in trim (the most common), 30 to 50 illustrations, white paper. The book language can differ from the site language.

3. Check every page

Flip through, zoom into each illustration and regenerate the ones you don't like. The automatic check catches images that are too dark, grey or duplicated, not a bad drawing: you approve every page before exporting. See a real example, with one page rejected and replaced.

4. Open your KDP account

On kdp.amazon.com, create your account and fill in your own tax and bank details — a personal step nobody else can do for you.

5. Create the paperback

  • Details: copy the title, subtitle, description and 7 keywords from the listing file.
  • AI-generated content: answer yes for images. This is mandatory.
  • ISBN: you can use the free ISBN offered by KDP.
  • Print options: black & white, white paper, same trim size as in Doodimo, no bleed.
  • Files: upload the interior PDF, then "upload a cover you already have" with the cover PDF.
  • Online previewer: check every page in KDP's tool. It has the final say.

6. Set the price

On Amazon.com the royalty rate goes from 50% to 60% from $9.99. KDP shows the printing cost and your exact royalty before you publish.

7. Publish and check

Amazon's review can take up to 72 hours. Then order an author copy to check the print quality. Amazon limits how many new titles you can publish per day: go one book at a time.

8. Get it seen

Pinterest pins, short videos of colored pages, and later Amazon Ads. Never promise results and follow Amazon's content guidelines.
